Relying in the perfect blend of sweet and spicy flavors, Bengali cuisine is famous for its subtle and fiery flavors, not to mention its huge spread of confectioneries and desserts. The cuisine is balanced between the main ingredients and its seasoning. Since food is considered to be an important aspect in their society, ladies spend most of their time cooking delicious and mouth-watering feast for their families. A typical dining set-up consists of either a large banana leaf serving as the plate/s or served on a large gun-metal or silver plate (thala) and the various items of food are placed in bowls (batis) around the top of the thala, running from right to left. Silver wares such as forks, spoons and knives are not normally used since most of the locals usually eat with their right hand.
