Have you ever wondered what kind of traveler you are?
Each traveler has a different need for a vacation. Each one also has a unique way of doing it. Like what they say, everyone has a destination but there are different ways of getting there.
One’s goal to travel may vary. Even how they do the trip may be different from how others do it. Hence, we would all agree that there are various types of travelers.
Let us look into the different travel personalities. In the end, tell me which kind of traveler you are.
Let’s see.
Table of Contents
The Budget Traveler.
Well, obviously, this person wants everything to be affordable. Believe it or not, some travelers actually manage to snatch discounted airfares, hotel accommodations, and others. One strategy of budget travelers is to book early.
As a matter of fact, others book a year before their trip or a couple of months before that. This way, everything is still cheaper!
Their motto is, “If it’s not on sale, then let’s not sail!” The good thing about traveling on a budget is that you can still enjoy the trip without the need to splurge. In the end, it is the experiences you gained from it that totally matters.
Remember: No one can buy your travel experiences. And it doesn’t matter if you got there spending less.
In fact, you should be proud of yourself that you were able to go to places without spending too much! Not everyone can do that! So, congratulations!
The Holidaymaker.
These people usually go to places where most tourists go. And they will book everything earlier since they still need to file for leave from their work.
If they can’t afford to be absent, they will check the calendars for holidays and long weekends.
Whenever there are long weekends, they would book a flight to a beach or other adventurous destinations.
Hence, you won’t see these guys at home when there are three or four days of holidays. For sure, they are out there lounging under the sun!
The Adventure Traveler.
Are you always on a lookout for unique experiences? Does tall mountains and a long zip line appeal to you? Then you are this kind of traveler.
Instead of going shopping on large malls or checking out historical sites, an adventure traveler prefers to visit destinations where they could try extreme activities.
They want to spend more time with nature and would prefer to visit remote locations to engage in physical activities and to explore new experiences.
The Free Spirit Traveler.
This person prefers a less well-planned vacation and would do whatever adventure he will find. He could go to different places even without a clue on where to stay.
This kind of traveler could take on whatever adventure comes without any restrictions.
He travels independently and won’t restrict themselves for any reasons. They will engage in anything they want even if it’s expensive. Yes, there isn’t any budgetary constraint at all! But everything is just about having fun!
The Thrill-Seeker Traveler.
Although this kind of traveler isn’t really into extreme physical activities, he wants to get involved in something fun and thrilling.
He prefers a trip that is unplanned since he finds it more enjoyable when things come in an unpredictable manner.
Merely walking around a place while looking for a place to eat or checking out tourist destinations is something a thrill-seeker would like to do. But, of course, he wouldn’t say no for a river cruise or a mountain trek.
The Collector.
What comes to your mind when you hear the word “collector”?
Yes, you are right. He is a hoarder and would buy lots of items to add to his collection- whatever that is! For some, the mere reason why they want to travel to different places is to buy new things to add to their hoard.
Once they are back home, these items will be displayed. Do you know the best part of shopping while in a new place? The items they buy actually come with so many amazing stories and experiences.
The traveler can be reminded by all these simply by looking at his collections. Sweet, right? Hence, he isn’t just collecting things but also memories!
The Backpacker.
People who travel for long periods of time with a huge backpack or a luggage that can be easily carried everywhere are called backpackers.
They prefer to stay in hostels or other inexpensive lodging and they utilize public transportation. They also want to meet locals and see beautiful sights in the area.
Backpackers visit a place not just to have a vacation but to experience the destination and learn something while there. They want to witness real-life situations and be involved with different types of people. You have probably seen one in your place!
The Indulgent Traveler.
First class hotels? Extravagant dinners? Loads of new clothes? This traveler got that all! He is all about YOLO-ing and wouldn’t hesitate to spend his dollars for anything and for everything!
This is the exact opposite of a budget traveler. He wouldn’t care about prices and fees. Don’t even ask if he wants to fly first class because he will.
He wants to get the best experience in every destination without worrying about how much it cost. Of course, he would prefer to travel with a partner who completes all the fun.
If you have a decent earning and you have a big budget for traveling, this could be you!
The Solo Traveler.
Well, obviously, this traveler goes to places alone.
Others may think it is boring. But, in truth, it is fulfilling. Solo travelers actually discover new things about themselves and they will also increase their self-confidence.
It would feel totally different to be out on your own without the need to rely on anyone.
Do you agree?
The Organized Traveler.
Some people won’t travel if it is not well-planned. Flights and hotel accommodations are booked early. The itinerary is complete as to where you will go, which restaurant to eat, what time to wake up and all.
Yup. It’s just like the out-of-town field trip you had in college. You have to strictly follow everything and do everything according to schedule.
The organized traveler is usually tasked to do all the bookings when traveling with a group. In short, he is the hero for your group’s trip.
So, what kind of traveler are you? Well, whatever your travel style is, what’s important is the experience and fun you will get while you are out and about!
It doesn’t matter if you are on a budget or you can splurge on anything. What matters is the once in a lifetime moments that you will experience during your trip.
Now that you know your travel personality, why don’t you share this post and tag your friends so they will also know which type of traveler they are.

Solo traveller, guilty as charged! And maybe a hoarder of travel books too!
Travel books? I’m sure that’s an awesome collection! π
Active + Nature + Remote location… Yep, I’m an adventure traveler! And a bit of an organised traveler as well – but I always welcome flexibility and changes of plans π
I’m most typically a budget traveller because that’s how I am able to travel as much as I do. But I’d like to think I have a little of each style of travel in me!
Hmph, think we might be a mad mixture of a few of these depending on how we feel on the day! Definitely frugal (most of the time,) but enjoy getting stuck in to local life and these days we can be found with backpacks in tow…
I think we all borrow a little from a few categories. I love adventure, I don’t necessary plan to the finest details, I love to explore, and hey if I can get a discount or some free perks I’m taking them. As for hoarding… My fridge is getting full of magnets and I don’t even know what to do with all the key chains I collected.. I only have like 3 keys… and yet I can’t stop buying them :))
haha.. Key chains does have that certain something that makes us all want to buy them when we visit a new place! LOL
Thats a tough one. I find myself wildly swinging between a backpacker and an organised traveller. Hard to point though. Im sure there’s a bit of each in everyone:)
I also believe that. Though, there may be one that is more prominent! π
Great post! I’m a bit of a budget traveler, collector and adventurer!
What a cool post! I can definitely not choose between backpacker, the solo traveller or the indulgent traveller π Bit of many things haha!
Thank you Sabrina! π
I can find myself in many of these statements π This is so true!!!
Im probably the organized traveler. Maybe budget, or holiday!
This post is awesome! So fun to try and put myself in one of categories. I was not able to do so though as I feel like I have something from many. Very fun read π
Great round up. I’m a few of these, like the solo, indulgent, budget and frees spirit. But I’m mostly a small town traveler and off-the-beaten path traveler, which needs to be part of this list as I’m sure there are more of us out there!
I love this compilation. I’m mainly a backpacker. And a solo and budget traveller. And a digital nomad/perpetual traveller which isn’t in the list :-). Not really a collector but I can tell you exactly where I bought each item I carry with me. Only buy useful things, of course. My latest purchases were sandals from Brazil and a bag from Uruguay, in both cases needed to replace old stuff.
I am the organised traveler for sure and a bit of the indulgent traveler too. I am always planning my trip i advance making sure i arrange everything, hotel, flights, activity etc all in advance. I often have a all itinerary planned too. Great post!
I like the classifications that you’ve chosen. I think I am a few of these – budget traveller, sometimes solo, thrill-seeker for sure, free-spirited and adventurer π
I’m a combination of a budget traveler, collector and an organized traveler π What about you?
A bit of the budget traveler, holidaymaker, collector and the indulgent traveler. hahah!
This is a great topic, I cannot really narrow it down to one. I’m definitely the organized traveller, but others also blend into it π
Fun post! I think I’m a combination of budget, holiday maker and organized traveler. <- OCD
haha!
I`m a free-spirited, solo traveler! In the beginning, I would plan everything, now I prefer to go as it flows, leaving space for surprises and changes of plans!
Definitely an organised traveler! Sometimes a little too organised π and when I travel with friends, my group is made up of different traveling styles so itβs a bit of a challenge but we always make it work and have loads of fun regardless!
Love this! I’m adventure, budget and organized.
Somehow, I feel like I have evolved as a person in my travels and I find it nowadays to put myself in a single category. Can’t we all just be called travelers who wants to enjoy the world? π
Could I be a bit of everything? Sometimes I am all about budget, but other times I am all about adventure or 5 star experience. I could not put myself in one certain category!
Love this list! I’ve actually been many of these types of travelers over the past 10 years – I think that as opposed to being defined by one label, our travel style has continued to evolve as we’ve grown older, and come to enjoy different things.
I used to be a budget and solo traveler, though now travel as a couple and prefer luxury experiences. Though I’ll always be an adventure traveler at heart … and never an organized one!!!
What an interesting post. I think I am a bit of all sometime or the other. but who does not like to save few $$$ π π
I’m an ORGANIZED Traveller hahaha!! you were on point when I get to book and plan everything even for group trips with my friends or family. It has been me always in charge, and it feels awesome actually π
Great read. π
I’m definitely a bit of a few different types – organized, indulgent, solo at times and holidaymaker (also at times)! This was a fun read, getting me thinking about what type of traveler some of my friends are!
Too funny – I’d say that I easily fit into a few of these categories. I’m an indulgent, thrill- seeking adventure traveller who is very organised.
After I read through the various types of travelers, I thought thinking what type of travelers we are. Find it difficult to put ourselves under any one type. Most of the time we are traveling as a couple and are luxury travelers. Sometimes we travel solo too. We are also adventure travelers and Holidaymakers. So kinda mix of everything I guess.
This post got me thinking. I am definitely not a holidaymaker and don’t have the budget to be extravagant….lol
I am not much of a collector either. All other categories I think apply to me to some extent.
I think I’m a mix of several types: an organizer, adventure, and indulgent! I don’t like to be an organizer though (too much work and responsibility), but if no one is doing it, I would carry out the tasks.
This is a lovely post. It is quite difficult to point out what kind of traveller we are. I think we are a mix of adventure traveller, backpacker, free-spirit and the thrill seeker! But yes, we are much less of organised one!!
Amazing post, I love the way you have described each traveler. I am a total free spirit traveler, I Plan but less, rest I leave on how it comes & definitely I am a collector too, I love to collect souvenirs as moments to remember.
I’m a culmination of several of these categories. I’m a budget traveler, but have things I’m willing to splurge on. I’m free-spirited AND organized. I have a rough route, but allow it to change. I’m a backpacker who doesn’t do hostel dorms anymore. It’s hard to put myself in a box and my travel type evolves with each trip.
AHHHH LOVED THIS – but so hard I think I’m lots of them put together!
I would definitely fall into the group of budget travelers as I always find destinations and tickets which are a good value for money! Excellent post!
Thank you, Agnes! π
I am a mix of your proposals: budget, adventurer, free spirit, thrill-seeker, backpacker and solo. Is it possible? I don’t consider myself “holiday maker” but yes, I tend to disappear when I have two or more days off π
What a cool article! I’m probably the Solo traveler – I especially love that I can meet so many people while being abroad when I’m traveling alone. Total freedom!
Oh, jeez… so many of these are a fit! Can I call myself a budget-adventure-free-spirit-solo traveler?? Definitely up for anything, donβt like itineraries that are too set, and who the heck doesnβt like low-cost travel? π
I think Iβm a mix of a few different types, but I also resonate with the Collector – however, I like to collect photos! Everything must be captured! π
Can I be an organized solo adventurer indulgent collector (I do love to shop!) and occasional backpacker??? While limit yourself, it’s a vast work out there π
I never really think about what sort of traveler I am and how that impacts my overall travel, but I am totally the free spirit. And that always suits me so well and I have amazing experiences.
Haha I feel like I switch between all of these different types almost daily when I’m travelling!
As I grow older, I gravitate more towards a free wheeling slow kind of travel where there is no need to mark off a checklist!
Indulgent! (as much as I can)
I am definitely the budget traveller, but I am also quite organized! I guess you have to be to travel on a budget. LOL.
Well, according to this list I’m an “organized” traveller haha! I like to plan every single day ahead of time so I can cram in everything I want to see!
Very nice and informative post. However I would like to add 2 more that of cultural and event travel.
Thank you, Somnath! Your inputs are very much appreciated π
You could call me an indulgent traveller for less who plans things way in advance. I do most of my trips on tours as well unless it is a city break. Great post!
Thank you, Janine! π
Great post. I sure wish I was a free-spirit traveller, but I think I’m somewhere between budget traveler and holiday traveler! What type of traveler are you?
Thank you, Erin! Well, I’m a combination of a budget traveler, holidaymaker, collector and the indulgent traveler. π
Wow! What an interesting post! But I really could not pick one! I think I am a combination of budget, adventure and organized traveler!
I am the mix of the collector and solo traveler
I identified myself as a budget and backpacker traveller. Always in couple π Nice Article!!
We are budget and backpacker travellers. But we do splurge on the delicious vegan food we find in our locations. We tried to do the holiday travelling, but we find it quite boring. We like to be always on the move.
I am a meticulous planner and plan most things much before visiting a place, but I always give adequate time for exploration. But some of my memorable moments during my travels are those that were experienced when I deviated from my original travel plans.
PS: There is one other category of traveller, the do-it-all. This traveller does not want to miss anything at all.
Uhh, I don’t think i fit in any of those categories… I keep an eye on my budget, but not when it comes to spend money on experiences (scuba diving, quad-riding, paragliding.. you name it)… which would make me an adventure traveller – but… then again, I can also feel more like having a lazy day on the beach for once… I use public transport, travel with a backpack and do not plan that much ahead. Aaaand… I collect fridge-magnets from every country I have visited π
You definitely covered all the traveler types here. I consider myself a hyper-organized, budget, adventure traveler, so I guess I’m the “combo” traveler, lol! However, one day I hope to be the indulgent traveler…at least a couple of times (don’t we all??). Great post!
Love this! I’m 30% the Indulgent traveler and I make it happen by being 70% a Budget traveler hehe – all my trips have some luxury highlights that I can afford because I try to cut back the costs on other parts of it π Such a fun read!
Thank you Michelle! π
Interesting post! For me, it’s the backpacker, the budget traveler and the solo traveler π Enjoyed reading!
I think I’m somewhere between the holiday and adventure traveller. I like to have a little bit of adventure on my vacations but also, I like to take it easy when I travel. Many times though, I end up being more active than relaxing because I want to see everything.
I am a nice combination of all of those types. As I love to travel and try different experiences, once in a while I may need to switch personalities and adapt to the circumstances π
This is so interesting – thanks for laying this all out. I would definitely say that I am the organised traveller in my group, everything is always down to me to plan, book and organise a trip. I love it though!
Free spirit!
